Remember the time when Google+ was supposed to be the next big thing in social media and was supposed to give competition to Facebook? That never happened and Google+ quietly slipped into in a state of near oblivion. However, it seems like Google''s long-lost social networking platform Google+ is getting a much-needed makeover, at least for the Android users for now. It's clear that the search giant has not given up on the social networking space is ready to give it another shot.
Engineering manager for Google+ Leo Deegan has taken to the Google+ platform to announce the update. He said:
"Hey folks, over the next several days, we'll be enabling a brand new version of the G+ Android app. Though it very closely resembles the current app, this new version is the culmination of a complete rewrite of many core features using Google's latest Android app infrastructure which will allow our Android team to build new features on a modern tech stack."
As per the post, we can infer that there is no drastic overhaul and majorly consists of upgradation. He said that the app will now incorporate a few subtle updates such as improvement in stream rendering and scrolling, redesign of the photo lightbox, slide up of comment options from a bottom sheet, viewable grey-spammed comments by post authors.
Besides mentioning what changes are coming, he also shed some light on a few things that the team is still working on. Giving an example he described, "leaving a comment on a post causes a full refresh of the post to include your comment."
The social media landscape has changed dramatically since Google+ was last relevant. Considering how Facebook and Twitter have many challenges - like fighting fake news and online harassment among other things - it will be interesting to see how Google+ will be in its latest avatar.
